Short Story Genres for Fiction


Genre Categories:
  1. Realistic-stories that are like real life
  2. Myth-god and goddesses, origin stories
  3. Legend/Folklore-stories with partial truths, but embellished with extraordinary or imaginative events
  4. Fables and Parables-stories that teach a lesson or have a moral
  5. Parodies and Satires-stories that are based on other stories but have a humorous or sarcastic twist
  6. Horror-stories that are scary
  7. Mystery-stories that gives you clues to figure out something
  8. Coming of age-stories that follow a young person as they are transitioning from child to adult
  9. Romance-love stories
  10. Fantasy – stories that have characters or settings that are considered mythical or imagined
  11. Action -Thriller/Suspense-exciting and action packed
  12. War Stories-stories in the setting of a war
  13. Westerns-stories set in the American Old West around the 1800’s
  14. Tales - old stories, usually from oral traditions, with a magical or extraordinary components
  • Folk tales-stories about common everyday people
  • Fairy tales-stories about royalty (king, queens, princes and princesses)
  • Tall Tales-stories about a hero that is larger than life and has exaggerated events
